Higher Rate of Morning Heart Attacks Not Due to Blood Pressure: Study

MONDAY, April 11 (HealthDay News) -- Normal daily fluctuations in blood pressure aren't linked with the well-documented fact that people are more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke in the morning, a new study shows.
It included 28 people without high blood pressure who underwent three types of sleep/wake cycle experiments designed to assess the connection between the internal body clock and the daily rise and fall in blood pressure.
In all three experiments, the volunteers showed an internal daily blood pressure variation with a peak at about 9 p.m. and the lowest blood pressure occurring in the late morning.
The researchers said the surprising finding that blood pressure is lowest in the morning means it's unlikely that the internal blood pressure cycle is connected to the increased risk of heart attack and stroke in the morning.
The study was published April 7 in the journal Circulation.
"We used three complementary experimental protocols and three different groups and found essentially the same results. That means we're dealing with something very robust," lead author Steven A. Shea, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said in a journal news release.

Vitamin K
It is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in blood clotting. Vitamin K is known as the clotting vitamin, because without it blood would not clot. Some studies indicate that it helps in maintaining strong bones in the elderly. Individuals with vitamin K deficiency usually have an increased propensity to bruising and bleeding.
Selenium (Se)
Deficiency of Selenium can lead to Keshan disease, which is potentially fatal. Selenium deficiency also contributes (along with iodine deficiency) to Kashin-Beck disease. The primary symptom of Keshan disease is myocardial necrosis, leading to weakening of the heart. Kashin-Beck disease results in atrophy, degeneration and necrosis of cartilage tissue. Keshan disease also makes the body more susceptible to illness caused by other nutritional, biochemical, or infectious diseases. Selenium may help to prevent cancer by acting as an antioxidant or by enhancing immune activity. Selenium is absorbed fairly easily in the upper gastrointestinal system. Plant sources of selenium may be more bioavailable compared to animal sources. The some of the functions of Selenium are (a) it may be an important inhibitor of various types of cancer through induced “apoptosis” (programmed cell death) (b ) it is a natural antioxidant (c) it is necessary for production of prostaglandins and (d) with the help of vitamin E it promotes normal growth and development and also enhances the antioxidant effect of vitamin E.

Lutein
Lutein is one form of carotenoid found in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, plus various fruits and corn. Egg yolks are also sources of lutein. Our body cannot produce Lutein but has to rely on food. Lutein provides nutritional support to our eyes and skin. Studies suggest that a mixture of nutrients, including lutein, may provide supplemental antioxidant capacity to the skin, helping counteract free radical damage. Lutein may also help prevent or slow down atherosclerosis, the thickening of arteries, which is a major risk for cardiovascular disease. Lutein is an antioxidant that appears to quench or reduce harmful free radicals in various parts of the body. Free radicals can play a role in a variety of chronic diseases. Lutein is said to have help in reducing the risk of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD occurs when the fragile center of the retina–the macula–deteriorates due to aging and damage by free radical. The macula is a small area of the retina responsible for central vision, and high visual acuity. Poor macular health can cause oxidative stress within the retina, leading to a loss of central vision. Lutein also filters the high-energy, blue wavelengths of light from the visible-light spectrum by as much as 90%. Blue light, in both indoor lighting and sunlight, is believed to induce oxidative stress and possible free-radical damage in human organs exposed to light, such as the eyes and skin.

叶黄素 (Lutein)
